No planet B - but do we care?

It`s that rime of the year when we are reminded that there is no planet B - and yet it seems we don`t really pay attention.

Tomorrow marks this year`s Earth Overshoot Day. In other words, humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what our planet can regenerate in that year. We maintain this deficit by liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

And the really really scary part is that this day comes earlier with every year of our current way of living.

Whilst in 1972, we had used up our planet`s resources by late December, 20 years later this date had already been reached in late October.

And this year we will have managed to live in a way that this date is August 1st.

Going forward, the question is whether we have any chance to stop or reverse this trend?

Being an eternal optimist, I think we do - but it needs real change!
