A conversation this morning reminded me of this question, one I often get asked typically from passive candidates and in particular, those at the executive level who often as not, haven't looked at their CV in years.

So when is a good time to update your CV?

Every three months? When you have left or started a new role? When you are considering a new challenge?

There's certainly no silver bullet and considering I spend a significant amount of time reviewing and helping shape CVs for my network, I myself haven't updated my own CV since applying for my first grad job after completing my masters in 2012.

I do however feel it is useful for those like me who haven't looked at their CV in over a decade, to have a digital notepad or a simple word document where you can document rough notes on achievements, successes, stats, projects delivered, key accomplishments, new certs and quals, promotions, new responsibilities you've taken on etc.

For passive candidates, content and happy in your role, updating your CV will be the last thing on your mind and in the fast paced world of work, starting a CV from scratch can be a little overwhelming. Equally, when you are spinning lots of plates and juggling lots of balls - particularly if you work in the #startup environment, it is easy to forget just how much you have achieved or been involved in. As such, it is always a good idea to jot things down as you go along so you have a base in which you can build from.

After all, it is good to be prepared for when that opportunity you never knew about comes knocking.

At Hyperion Executive Search, we work with the most innovative #cleantech and #climatetech companies on the planet, connecting them with the very best talents - typically those who are assumed to be off the market, passive and otherwise unavailable. We enable our clients to scale by convincing the very best passive candidates to join a much more meaningful cause through the art of storytelling and quite simply because our clients aren't your ordinary, run of the mill businesses with ordinary, run of the mill jobs. To grow and scale your team, please get in touch with a member of the team today and for more tips on what to include and when to update your CV, check out the article linked to this post.

Your CV is a vital tool in your career toolkit - and a great one can really help accelerate your career.
