Two years ago today I completed my very first marathon and it reminded me of the intense training plan I put in place in order to cross that finish line and get the result I wanted.
Just like hiring, running a marathon is hard. In order to be successful, you need focus, a proper plan, often a coach or the external support of experienced runners to give you tips and guidance on how to build strength, stamina, how to fuel your body, recover and ultimately, achieve your goal.
Successful marathon runners embark on a rigorous training programme, following a clear and well crafted strategy, dedicating hours upon hours into planning and preparation.
Successful hiring managers are no different and as a founder, when building out your leadership team you should be clear on who you want to hire, you should have a well thought out plan on how to go about the hiring process, what that process should look like, and by when you want the hire in place. If you aren't sure on any of the above, seek external support and guidance from those who can help.
All great hiring processes start with understanding your goals for the hire. If you can’t define a role, you shouldn’t hire for it. If you haven’t thought out your approach and how you are going to find your next hire, you shouldn’t hire for it. If you fail to prepare, then you better start preparing to fail.
