We all know about the dominance of Chinese and wider Asian battery suppliers and most in Europe agree that we must take action to localise production, for economic, market security and employment reasons.
Therefore, the planned Rules of Origin are really important - the majority of EV batteries and wider components must be produced locally or manufacturers face additional tariffs.
But like with any emerging technology development, we must consider the big picture. There needs to be the necessary time afforded if we're going to have the best chance of success. Therefore I welcome the news this week with 10 key EU countries, including European battery powerhouse Germany calling to extend the timeline for introducing these Rules by 3 years and for the UK to be included in such changes.
I speak to battery companies and leaders every day and the regional growth is very exciting. We clearly have the tech innovation, the great minds leading the growth, and advances in industrialisation. We now need the right regulatory framework to match!
Hopefully we come to an agreement to extend this timeline and we continue to see great EU-UK collaboration. Ultimately, we're all fighting the same fight!
