The road to 100% renewable energy is sure to be a rocky one. A road full of almost's, not quite's and challenges. Just like the road to success, it was never going to be easy.
The journey will be filled with slow advances and small wins. But nevertheless, I am convinced we will get there in the end. Together.
These four US cities are drivers of this transition. Rock Port, MO. Greensburg, KS. Georgetown, TX. Aspen, CO. Powered by 100% renewables, they stand as leaders of the renewable revolution and have offered insights into the political will and economic drivers that got them there.
The building pressure to decarbonise is encouraging cities, states and companies to look harder at themselves and work to become more sustainable and eco-friendlier. The US is being transformed and is truly stepping up to the plate as a potential green superpower and global influencer as we come to the end of 2019, which has been a year of strong foundation building.
Moving into 2020, more radical breakthrough is needed to solve longer-term grid decarbonisation challenges, such as how to deal with intermittency and seasonal weather variations in regions with very high penetrations of renewables.
