Personally I have a lot to thank FiTs for for developing my career in the cleantech sector. I joined a solar installation business a couple of months after the launch of the FiTs which truly kick-started the solar industry in the UK. I rode the "solarcoaster" through many highs and lows! Whilst there were certainly issues with the FiT levels and timescales, it did a fantastic job of elevating the industry. Now a much more mature industry, the end of the FiTs heralds a new era for the solar industry. The financials are not as attractive as they once were but people will continue to turn to solar for the long term benefits of generating their own power. Self-consumption now becomes increasingly important which will provide a boost to the energy storage, EV and smart-home industries.
Thanks FiTs, you've been great, but now it's time for life without you!
By the end of this week, the FiT will be no more and the industry will instead look ahead to the promise of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and a subsidy-free future. Whilst the FiT may be very much on the way out, its impact cannot be denied. Its history is best summarised by MCS director Chris Roberts, who simply describes it as a “rollercoaster”.
