This is a very interesting development in Germany. For the first time there are serious plans to install large batteries with a capacity of 500MW in Southern Germany. This would enable the grid operators to use more wind energy generated in the North of Germany and virtually transport it into the South where it`s needed for the car manufacturers and other heavy industries. The challenge is the speed with which the batteries need to respond to avoid a black out in the system. Scientists are looking to solve this problem by using a so called Netbooster.

The big question is if the technology is already economically viable. Either way, it shows that there is some momentum in the discussion about the "Energiewende".
