Power to the people, owned by the people.
We're currently in a period of great transition, moving from being on the edge of the energy system to having more control from where our energy comes from and how we want to consume it.
With a growing appetite for investment in community energy projects, it's exciting to see a future in which consumers increasingly take charge of their energy usage becoming more & more realistic.
It will be interesting to see the growth of this sector in a model which heavily favours traditional, large scale power generation but there are some fantastically innovative companies out there who are bridging the gap.
It is part of a wider trend towards “distributed energy” as the industry moves away from the traditional model of large coal-burning or gas-fired power stations that send electricity through central transmission networks, to one that is dominated by smaller-scale, often renewable, plants. It is also, increasingly, an investment proposition for socially conscious investors.
