It has been surprising that the uptake of solar car ports have been so slow in the UK. On the face of it it presents the perfect solution where the power from the PV systems can be used directly to charge EVs and to charge batteries which can provide power for lighting etc when it is dark. In this particular example of a park and ride car park, stored power could be used to charge electric buses at night. Excess power can also be sold to local energy users creating additional revenue streams. With the uptake of EVs rising so rapidly, solar car ports could play a very important role going forward.
The car park will be covered by three main canopies fitted with solar modules. Generated electricity will be used first and foremost to power LED lighting and adjacent electric vehicle charging points. Any surplus will be stored using the battery system and sold to local customers, helping to finance the project’s development.
