Great to see more solar energy being generated than by coal in the last month in the UK. Of course the time of year helps with peaking solar irradiation but this is a significant event in our transition to a low carbon economy. With the UK phasing out coal power stations by 2025, it is time for other technologies to fill the void.
Solar is going through a very challenging time at the moment and will need to stay as innovative as it ever has to keep deploying significant amounts of capacity in the coming years. Local generation where it is needed is the dream and to avoid outdated centralised energy generation models like Hinkley Point C!
The UK solar industry has reached its latest milestone after generating more energy in a full month than coal for the first time, according to analysis by Carbon Brief. This follows the first of several signifiers of solar’s growth against fossil fuels earlier this year when the renewable technology overtook coal generation for the first full day in April and for the first week from 3 May.
